Sepy Baghaei is a theatre director and playwright based in London. She originally trained as an actor at the Australian Academy of Dramatic Art, before moving to London to complete an MA in Advanced Theatre Practice at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. In 2023, she was invited to take part in the National Theatre Directors course.
As a director, Sepy is primarily drawn to new writing. She has worked with a range of British theatre companies including: the National Theatre, Almeida Theatre, The Gate, English Touring Theatre, Sheffield Theatres, and Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
Sepy’s work as a director has received a range of awards and nominations internationally. Her production of Wish You Were Here for The Gate Theatre was nominated for an Off West End Award for Best Production; and her production of Daytime Deewane for the National Theatre of Parramatta was nominated for a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Production for Young People. She won Best Production for Something To Be Done at Short+Sweet Sydney, where she was also nominated for the Best New Talent award. She is a recipient of the Ian Potter Cultural Trust Award and the Guildford Academic Associates scholarship, and has been longlisted for the RTST Sir Peter Hall Director Award.
As a playwright, Sepy’s play A Good Day Will Come was shortlisted for The Women’s Prize for Playwriting in 2023. She has received developmental support from companies including the National Theatre Studio, and excerpts of her writing have been staged by the Royal Court and Mercury Theatre.
